A real danger

The Internet has revolutionized our lives but it is a carrier of risks and dangers !

While the Internet is a tremendous tool for accessing knowledge, entertainment and communication, any one of these tools allows the involuntary exposure of our children to content which is harmful to them :

  • Pornographic images found during research for information
  • Attempts by paedophiles to make contact via the chat rooms and game sites
  • Corruption of minors

Every day our newspapers collect sordid newsitems and print banner headlines:

  • " At the age of 12, she runs away from Marseille with an older Internet user”
  • “ Operation Cathedral: dismantling of a paedophile ring which had diffused more than 750 000 pictures of child pornography, notably on the Net "
  • "Austrian authorities announced that they have the names of over 235O suspects in 77 countries and have dismantled the largest pedophile network ever to have been discovered” (02/2007)
  • "The frightful attempted kidnapping by a pedophile and his accomplices from the Nice region” (05/2007)
  • "The arrest of 700 people  by the British police. 31 children saved from the     'network of horror" (06/2007)

But  overwhelmed by the amount  we only lend it an absent-minded ear. Now, our children are no longer protected.

According to Médiamétrie, in February 2006, 26,063,000 French people of 11 years old and older connected to the Internet during the previous month, that is 50,3 % of the French population of this age group.

French Internet users under 24 years of age represent more than 7,5 million people, or nearly a third of all the Internet users, and we have noticed an explosion of the use of emails between teenagers.

More than 800.000 pornographic sites appear on the Net. The great majority of pornographic material is disseminated by this method.

Faced with this phenomenon, it is obvious that parents greatly underestimate what their children are doing on the Net. For their part, the young have little awareness of the danger on the Internet and most of the time, access is made without  parental supervision.

Besides, to date, no technical solution exists to completely prevent our children being exposed to the contents or to those persons who are harmful.

We have to raise the alarm !
